The story
About this creation
Tourmaline is one of the most versatile and mysterious gemstones in the world. Its history reaches deep into the past: people used tourmaline long before mineralogy learned to precisely distinguish precious minerals. Owing to its wealth of hues, it was frequently mistaken for ruby, emerald, or sapphire. Even the Portuguese navigators who discovered green tourmalines in Brazil in the 16th century were convinced they had found emerald deposits.
The very name of the stone derives from the Sinhalese word toramalli, meaning «mixed gemstones» . And this designation captures the very essence of tourmaline with remarkable precision: no other gemstone possesses such a sweeping palette of colours and hues.
At the close of the 19th century, tourmaline became a symbol of American jewellery culture thanks to the celebrated gemologist of Tiffany & Co.George Frederick Kunz. It was he who brought renown to the tourmaline deposits in the states of Maine and California, and described in exquisite detail the beauty of the stones mined there.
Despite its popularity in America, China was for a long time the largest market for tourmalines. The imperial court prized this mineral above all for its rich colouration, and used it to create carved miniatures, jewels, and exquisite snuff boxes.
In the 20th century, the world's tourmaline reserves began to expand significantly. First, major deposits were discovered in Brazil, and from the 1950s onwards, new sources were found across the globe. This enabled jewellers to create ever bolder and more original jewels featuring this exceptional stone.
Why tourmaline is so prized today
Tourmaline is a stone of individuality. Unlike many classic precious minerals, it is not defined by a single recognisable colour or a single character. It may be delicate and romantic, vivid and bold, austere and aristocratic all at once.
