The story

About this creation

Spinel is one of the most underestimated gemstones of the past and simultaneously one of the fastest-growing phenomena on the contemporary jewellery market. Barely fifty years ago, spinel was scarcely spoken of; today, however, its popularity is rising sharply. The reason lies in a unique combination of exceptional beauty, rarity, and superior gemological properties, which stand confidently alongside sapphires and rubies.

One of spinel's most distinctive characteristics is its high dispersion. Dispersion is the stone's ability to scatter light into spectral flashes of varying hues. It is precisely this quality that causes spinel to blaze with fiery brilliance under any light. This effect is especially pronounced in finely cut stones and distinctly sets spinel apart from most other coloured gemstones.

Spinel is also distinguished by its high refractive index, which lends it an extraordinarily bright, vivid, and radiant appearance. Combined with the purity of the crystal, this creates a characteristic inner-light effect that is exceptionally prized by collectors and jewellers alike.

Most spinels belong to the category of stones with minimal inclusions. Natural inclusions may of course occur; however, spinels are generally cleaner and more transparent than many other coloured gemstones.

The value of spinel is largely determined by its colour. Certain hues have already become true legends of the jewellery world. Among them, for example, is the intensely raspberry-red spinel from the Mahenge region and the cobalt-blue spinel from Vietnam with its characteristic electric-blue hue. It is precisely these rare colours that exhibit the most dynamic price appreciation on the global market.

It is, however, important to recognise that investment value is assessed individually for each stone. Not every Mahenge spinel automatically qualifies as a collector's or investment-grade specimen. The determining factors are colour intensity, clarity, size, cut quality, and overall visual impression.

Nevertheless, it can be said that the spinel market continues to grow dynamically. An ever-growing number of gemstone connoisseurs appreciate its broad colour palette, rarity, and extraordinary brilliance. Today, spinel is regarded as one of the most promising coloured gemstones, both for collecting purposes and for jewellery of the highest calibre.

Key virtues of spinel:

  • High dispersion and fiery brilliance
  • Exceptional brilliance owing to a high refractive index
  • Exceptional clarity and transparency
  • Rare and highly coveted colour hues
  • Growing demand on the global market
  • A promising stone for collectors and investors alike
  • Broad application in luxury jewellery

Living with your jewel

Caring for your jewellery

Caring for jewellery matters more than most people expect. Your creation sparkles newly after a gentle cleansing: most gemstones, and diamonds especially, respond beautifully to a wash in mild soapy water. But not every gem. An emerald, for example, must never be washed this way; its natural character asks for a different, gentler care. Please always ask us how to care for your jewellery, and especially for your gemstone. We will gladly show you.

Gold is a soft metal, and it deserves to be worn thoughtfully: removed for sport and heavy work, kept away from chemicals, stored in its box. And once every couple of years, we recommend bringing your jewel to a jeweller so the prongs can be checked for wear; a five-minute inspection protects a stone for a lifetime.
